In August 1834, sixteen members of the First DuPage Baptist Church gathered in the home of Nancy and Daniel Warren to found the Second DuPage Baptist Church, which is now known as the Community Baptist Church of Warrenville.  The church received its charter from the Northern Baptist Association of Chicago in February of 1836.

Community Baptist Church todayIn the early years, the Warrenville Church depended upon visiting and neighboring pastors, as well as its own members to fill the pulpit.  Shortly after the church was chartered, Lyman B. King became the first Pastor.  A period of rapid growth ensued, and by 1842 the church had a building for worship and a new name: The Warrenville Baptist Church.  By 1857 a new building was needed as the membership count had risen to 50 and the Sunday School registration included 50 more.  As there was no baptistry, the DuPage River was used for baptisms until 1935.  The church building was destroyed by fire in 1935, after which the present structure was built. Although the church grew quickly, there were difficulties.  A number of controversies raged in the Warrenville church and in the Northern Baptist Association during the mid-nineteenth century.  Slavery, in particular, was hotly debated in the pre-Civil War era.

In the early part of this century, a handful of dedicated members struggled to keep the church alive until a resurgence in membership in the 1920’s once again revitalized the church.  The church plant was expanded in 1955 with the addition of an education building.  Today, the William Wallace Education Building is the home of the Sunday school and the Agapè Preschool, a ministry of the church.

The recent pastors of the church have all nurtured strong ecumenical ties with the other churches in the community.  There have been a number of well attended community services at the various Warrenville churches over the years.

The church believes in prayer.  The faith that is evidenced through prayer, worship, and stewardship is an inspiration.  The Church periodically engages in formal planning, including self assessment and goal setting as it seeks God’s Will for the future direction of its ministry.  As part of this process, the church develped a purpose statement affirming that “Community Baptist Church exists to proclaim, to live and to celebrate the Good News of Jesus Christ.”  The Church moves into the future with hope and with the confidence that the same hand which guided it in the past and sustained it through many difficult times will continue to guide it in the future.
