As
many of you know, Sandy Hendricks’ sister, Sheri
Herring, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in October
of 2003. Sheri is an amazing woman with a gentle
spirit and incredible inner strength. Anyone who
has a friend or family member with cancer, will understand
the fear, sadness, anger, and most of all, the helplessness
that one feels upon hearing this news. After the
initial shock, Sandy decided that she would do whatever
she could to help.
On
Mother’s Day of this year, Sandy and “Team
Sheri” participated in the Y-ME
Race at Chicago’s lakefront. The Y-ME
National Breast Cancer Organization provides programs
and services to those who are affected by breast cancer. The
24-hour Y-ME National Breast Cancer Hotline is among
its most well-known programs, and is the only 24-hour
hotline in the country that is staffed entirely by trained
peer counselors who are breast cancer survivors. The
Hotline and all of Y-ME’s programs are offered
free of charge to those who need them. Y-ME aims
to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone.
Sandy
and Sheri’s parents, Phil and Barbara Voorhees,
Sandy and Duane Hendricks, Sheri Herring (the team’s
inspiration), and Stephanie Gerace all participated in
the Y-ME Race and helped to raise over $2,000.00, more
than double the team’s goal. Duane ran the
5K race with a great time of 26:45, while the rest of
the team participated in the one mile walk on what turned
out to be a beautiful day in Grant Park. Thank
you to everyone at CBC for all the love and support you
have showed us!
